Indo Pacific Region and Africa: an Economic Overview - by Intesa San Paolo
The 21 February 2025, Intesa San Paolo, during the Singapore Budget Breakfast Briefing (Cross-Chamber), presents an interesting topic regarding an in-depth economic overview of the Indo-Pacific and Africa, with a focus on trade, investment, and geopolitical trends. It explains how the Indo-Pacific concept has expanded over time to include more countries due to its increasing economic and strategic significance. Various nations, including the U.S., Canada, and several European and Asian countries, have adopted Indo-Pacific strategies.

The economic landscape is analyzed, highlighting that the ASEAN region remains a key driver of trade integration, benefiting from supply chain shifts and technological advancements. While Asia-Pacific economies show resilient growth forecasts, there are concerns over inflation, global trade policies, and geopolitical tensions that could affect stability. China’s role remains central, though structural challenges like the housing market crisis and U.S. trade restrictions are shaping its trajectory. Meanwhile, India’s economy is expected to slow slightly before rebounding due to strong domestic demand and policy adjustments.

Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing a pickup in economic growth and declining inflation, with key trade agreements such as AfCFTA expected to enhance integration and trade. The Middle East also presents a mixed picture, with the Gulf economies maintaining steady growth despite regional uncertainties.

Trade relations between Italy and various Indo-Pacific and African countries are analyzed, showing fluctuations in foreign direct investments and trade balances. Italy has significant trade deficits with China and India but enjoys trade surpluses with the UAE and Singapore. Key sectors include machinery, metals, textiles, and chemicals.

Overall, the presentation highlights both opportunities and challenges in the Indo-Pacific and Africa, with economic shifts driven by digital transformation, trade agreements, and policy changes in major economies.
